Benton Aloe BHA Toner | Review

BHA (beta hydroxy) is one of the hugely hyped chemical components in the beauty industry today. BHA targets dullness, unevenness and dead cells deep in the skin. You might be thinking now "What on earth is BHA?"

BHA is also commonly known as salicylic acid. Salicylic acid is a compound commonly found in beauty products targeting acne. In most beauty counters, BHA is included in various beauty products such as facial cleansers, moisturizers, serums and toners (like this!). BHA penetrates deep into the skin and removes dead skin.

You can't see the result with your naked eyes, but after days of using it, you can see a difference in the texture and brightness of your skin. So, is Benton BHA toner worth to invest? Let's find out!

The Benton Aloe BHA Toner comes in a 200ml plastic bottle with a pump opening- which is leak-proof and travels friendly.

It may look small in the photo, but this bottle can last for at least 4-7 months depending on your usage. A little goes a long way, and you do not want to overapply acid onto your skin.

The consistency is slightly on the thicker side, compared to your standard watery toner.

One bottle of this cost me MYR 54 (on sale MYR 39).

Active ingredient: salicylic acid (0.50%) the maximum amount of acid to put on your skin.

It is important to slowly build up the tolerance of the acid depending on your skin type. This can burn your skin if you are not careful. Despite the product claiming that it is gentle even for sensitive skin, based on my own experience, if you're new to acid, introduce it lightly.

Warning: Not every skin type is tolerant of the acid. So, before using it, patch test on your neck or a small part of your face.

Other ingredients worth highlighting are glycerin, sodium hyaluronate, snail secretion filtrate and aloe barbadensis leaf juice (pore care & improve skin barrier).

These ingredients lock moisture and hydration into your skin. Despite the hydrating ingredients and recommended usage (daily use day & night), BHA can be drying to the skin.

If you have combination or dry skin, you might want to use this only once or twice a week. However, if you have oily skin, you might be able to use it 3-4 times a week
(NOTE: I still suggest you use it a maximum of 3 times a week despite any skin types).

How I use BHA toner:
  1. Use this right after you wash your face, and wait at least 10 minutes before applying moisturizer. Another option is to use your regular toner, then mix this toner with your moisturizer (if you have sensitive skin).
  2. Soak the toner on a cotton pad, and apply it as a 15-minute mask on the active acne area.
  3. Use it once in 2 days, then slowly build up (if your skin is positive about it!). I prefer to use it only once or twice a week.
  4. Highly recommend using it at night (skin reparation time!).
  5. Apply the solution to the nose helps break down blackheads and you'll find it easier to remove them (this usually takes about 2-3 days to soften the dead cells).

In my opinion, this is an excellent alternative in treating dull skin due to acne, but not scars from acne. It may not heal the acne specifically, but it provides the overall fairness and evenness of the skin despite the bumpy acne.

If you wish to prevent further breakouts, this comes in handy as it dissolves the whiteheads (whiteheads are the leading cause of acne pustules) internally- although at times physical removal is still required.

Overall, a useful product in clearing pores and controlling breakouts but I wouldn't be dependent on it to cure acne.
