How To Set Simple Yet Practical Resolutions

Resolution is easier said than done. Many of us find new year's resolutions to be overwhelming and impractical as we've soon predicted the probability of being defeated by the end of the year. Another reason for an unsuccessful resolution is by the second week of the new year they're put aside. To shift our resolutions toward a doable pathway, there are 3 basic rules to follow. I am not merely writing this based on others' opinions, but I'm sharing this as I've been setting new resolutions for the past 7 years. In the beginning, I was sceptical about setting goals in life as the majority of what I've viewed online tells of being OK to go with the flow and avoid being stressed out because of one particular goal. Nonetheless, I'd come to understand the importance of setting new goals, despite the possibility of failing. As practice makes things perfect, so does setting new resolutions.

Setting goals is a way of reflecting on your past experiences. As you look upon the past year, whether life has been victorious or painful, you get to analyze yourself physically and emotionally. Your resolutions are reflections of your behaviour when handling various situations. It is a checkpoint of your well-being and maturity level. From then on, you alter your new resolution to improve for the better you.

Writing new goals is a distraction to focusing on winning. I'm referring to winning to achieving goals or dreams you've set. Listing out your goals can help you to target the significant items you want to accomplish. It is a great way to lay out everything you have on your plate and shift your focus on the real importance that helps you to be motivated and productive.

Top 3 Goals

In my early years of setting resolutions,  I was listing at least ten resolutions- which was ridiculously too much to handle, hence the failure that eventually led to disappointment. However, if you know you could handle 10 goals, you go girl. My point here is for beginners who wish to own a useful resolution list; I suggest you put the most energy and focus on the 3 most essential items in your life now and make them the top 3. The phrase "quality over quantity" is crucial when setting new goals. Start small as the most vital objective is to achieve them. A few suggestions to be listed on the top 3 are a physical and mental weakness as well as one new skill or program you've been wanting to sign up for but putting off for the past year. E.g., if you're easily stressed out in most situations, you might want to implement meditation sessions in your list. Research ahead of a well-suited and comfortable meditation method and kick start the new year with a new habit.

Be specific and practical

When writing your resolutions, you want to make your life somewhat easier than complicated. Be reminded to keep your list brief but specific. E.g., if you try writing "be lean and healthy," you might want to switch it up to "exercise 3 times a week and drink 2L of water per day". You want doable goals based on your lifestyle. You do not have to set grand goals that are beyond your financial ability or lack of time or commitment to do it. Being realistic is critical when setting goals. Do what you can afford to do. Resolutions are a motivational driving force, not a push too hard on yourself.

Draw out a plan for the resolutions

You can't be solely writing resolutions and believing them to come true on your own. A few elements to achieve your goals are to list down the 'hows' and 'whats.' How are you going to achieve it? What are you going to do to tackle your goals? What is the process required to go through? What are the new habits or methods to incorporate into your life? E.g., to be healthy, you'll have to have to grow a new practice of tracking down the amount of water consumed and buy workout shoes, then hit the gym or jog in your neighbourhood garden. Towards the end of your writing, do list down 3 wishes or expectations on how far you want your goals to be accomplished. This method allows you to check on the result and review it for the next year. You'll be surprised.

Bonus Tips!

Have a secondary copy of your list somewhere you'll see every day

We are forgetful creatures, aren't we? To be well reminded of your goals/resolutions, you'll want to see them every day to retain all the words for as long as you can remember until you achieve them. Stick a photocopied or rewritten copy of your resolution on your desk, or makeup area or set the reminder on your smartphone and turn on the notifications.

It's okay to fail at any achievement at any time within the year, but that's not an excuse to stop making resolutions. Take your failure as an opportunity to improve your skill or character in the new year with more determination and focus. Resolution-making is easy, but it requires hard work to achieve it. However, once you get into the rhythm and practice, you'll thank yourself for enduring the change. Hit me in the comments below for other resolutions ideas you know!
